Ayurveda training: How to become an Ayurveda wellness practitioner

Ayurveda Team

Ayurveda is an ancient, holistic healing art that originated in Kerala in southern India and is practised mainly in India and Sri Lanka, but now also in Europe. Read here how you can get the certificate "Ayurveda Wellbeing Practitioner" yourself - and whether you necessarily have to travel to India for an Ayurveda training.

Ayurveda training in India or Austria?

Ayurveda training can be done in Austria or India.

The "knowledge of life", as Ayurveda can be translated from Sanskrit, originates from Asia. For many interested people, it therefore seems obvious to also complete an Ayurveda training in India.

Ayurveda Training in India

Those who choose this option should know: Ayurveda in India, e.g. in Kerala, often involves different ideas and approaches than we are used to in the West.

Indian philosophy, for example, is more important in an Ayurveda training in India than it would be in a training in a German-speaking country.

Nevertheless, an Ayurvedic education in the home of this teaching undoubtedly means a particularly deep, original immersion in the Ayurvedic teachings.

In any case, Ayurveda is considered a holistic concept for more well-being and balance in life, individually tailored to the individual.

Ayurveda Training in Austria

Since 2006, there has been the possibility in Austria to obtain a diploma certificate as an "Ayurveda Wellbeing Practitioner". The path to the diploma takes 3 years and includes part-time training.

Yoga is also an important part of the Ayurveda training.

The programme includes, among other things, over 150 protocolled massage applications and more than 100 hours of teaching on the basics of orthodox medicine such as anatomy and pathology.

Ayurveda training takes place in certified training institutes, such as the European Academy for Ayurveda, the Vienna VedaVital or the "Kremstal" Ayurveda School.

The contents of the three-year training, including Pulse reading, Ayurvedic nutrition, massage techniques, yoga or the therapeutic use of oil and herbs, officially qualifies the trainee to work independently after completion of the course.

If you want to become an Ayurvedic wellness practitioner, you have to reckon with costs of several thousand euros. However, this sum also finances a three-year training and thus an extremely comprehensive knowledge of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda massage training

You are mainly interested in Ayurvedic massages and do not want to spend several years in training? The remedy is appropriate seminars on Ayurvedic massage techniques, such as those offered by the European Academy of Ayurveda in many places.

Ayurvedic massage techniques refer to the entire body and can be performed with or without accessories. In addition to sole massages, there are, for example, full-body oil massages, classic back massages, dry massages with silk gloves as well as self-massage techniques.

Ayurvedic massages are intended to release blockages, strengthen joints and stimulate energy zones so that the doshas can be brought back into balance. In seminars on Ayurvedic massage, you learn not only how to bring relaxation to yourself or others with certain hand movements. Rather, you can use the power of massage as a therapeutic tool.

Nutrition plays a large and important role in the Ayurvedic way of life.

Nutrition also plays an important role in the Ayurvedic principle of life. The body is considered a complex system on which food has a significant influence. The question in Ayurvedic cooking is therefore: How can the doshas best be promoted?

Training opportunities include courses on pure Ayurvedic cooking or on Ayurvedic nutrition and health counselling. These seminars and training courses focus on the classification of medicinal plants and (Ayurvedic) foods.

Other topics include the teaching of the six tastes (Rasa), herbology, Ayurvedic dietary methods for eating disorders, obesity or allergies, as well as the promotion of the so-called digestive fire (Agni).

As in all areas of Ayurveda, the aim here is to find the exact diet for oneself or others that optimally brings about physical and mental well-being.

Training in Ayurveda Cosmetics

Herbs, oils and massage techniques: These remedies are also used for cosmetic purposes in Ayurveda. Training courses or seminars on the subject of Ayurveda cosmetics provide knowledge about Skin diagnosis and care and about the connection between nutrition and skin in balance.

Based on these basics, in cosmetic Ayurveda you learn how to use different oil-based products, herbs, brushing and massage techniques to make the skin look younger and to care for the hair. Seminars on training in Ayurvedic cosmetics are offered, for example, by WIFI Vienna.

Ayurveda training: Knowledge as a way of life

Depending on whether you choose the complete training or individual seminars on specific aspects of Ayurveda: You will not only take away technical knowledge, but also a way of life.

Through the holistic approach, one learns in Ayurveda training to recognise the human being as a complex system. So it's not just about wellness treatments or a trend. The focus is on the well-being of the individual - a learning effort that is worthwhile.
